Initial configuration:

  • Start sconfig
  • Rename Computer Name (Option 2)
  • Check if Remote management is enabled (Option 4)
  • Change windows update to Automatic (Option 5)
  • Remote Desktop – Enable (Option 7)
  • Setup Network (Option 8)
  • Add Server to domain (Option 1)

Configure server core for remote administration:

  • Open server manager
  • From server manager, right click “All Servers” and select “Add server”
  • Add core server

Change firewall rule:

  • Open powershell as administrator
  • run following commands

Computer management:

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)” new enable=yes
  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Remote Event Log Management” new enable=yes

Remote Administration

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Remote administration” new enable=yes

Event Viewer

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Remote Event Log Management” new enable=yes

Services

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Remote Service Management” new enable=yes

Shared Folders

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “File and Printer Sharing” new enable=yes

Task Scheduler

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Remote Scheduled Tasks Management” new enable=yes

Disk Management

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Remote Volume Management” new enable=yes

Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Windows Firewall Remote Management” new enable=yes

Reliability and performance

  • NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “Performance Logs and Alerts” new enable=yes
    NetSH AdvFirewall Firewall set rule group “File and Printing Sharing” new enable=yes

You can also download core configurator and have basic administration. Download iso file, mount and run command Start_Corefig.wsf

Please note following services are not available in server core

  • Active Directory Federation Services
  • Application Server
  • Fax Server
  • network Policy and Access Services
  • Remote Desktop Services, gateway, session host, web access
  • Volume Activation Services
  • Windows Deployment services

Changing server core to full GUI

  • start run powershell
  • type following command
    • Add-WindowsFeatures Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra
    • Add-WindowsFeatures Server-Gui-Shell,Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra
